King of Cups - Tarot

The King of Cups represents our emotional maturity and authority.  When we encounter the King within ourselves, we are asked to realize the potent emotional power we carry and to take responsibility for what we are creating from it.

Our emotional power is channeled through our intuition, our imagination and our creative expression.  Our own power and authority dictate what we do with this energy. This King is not shy in his emotional expression, nor is he ruled by it. He recognizes that our emotions can be utilized to create and communicate, however he also recognizes our emotions need structure and discipline around them to be channeled into something tangible and useful.

His water qualities make him a calm, patient and nurturing leader.  His status as king makes him a powerful authority and ruler.  He can offer compassion and understanding in most every situation and yet he also has a calm rational approach for how to get things done. He is balanced in his both his emotions and logic and possesses the wisdom and maturity to navigate between his heart and his heart.  He is not ruled by one or the other, but rather utilizes both in all that he does.

In cultivating this King within ourselves, we are asked to have a firm yet gentle rule over our emotions.  To allow our emotions to flow freely, but within reason.  The King understands that when we let our emotions take over without control or discipline, we potentially create unnecessary drama in our lives.  However, when we can allow this flow with calm control, we can direct our emotional energy in powerful ways.

The King also teaches us to trust the authority of our own intuitive wisdom. Do no look for validation of your power outside of yourself, rather trust what you feel and act with the power of authority that respects the wisdom of your own intuitive truth.  You do not need to prove yourself to anyone or to ask for permission to follow your intuitive truth when you respect and trust your own power.
