The Hierophant represents spiritual authority and is a teacher and guide to help show us the way to connecting with Spirit (God, Source, Universe, Allah, Budda, etc. etc.) within ourselves. Some may recognize this role within the priest, shaman and guru of different belief systems who act as mediators between our material selves and our spiritual selves. However, this card comes up to remind us we do not need to look outside of ourselves to find this energy because there is nothing and no one that can stand between ourselves and Spirit. These spiritual leaders can guide us towards this connection, but ultimately it is up to us to cultivate it.
The Hierophant asks us to explore our Faith and to discover what truly connects us to Spirit. Is it within the walls of a church? Around the fire in ceremony? Amongst the trees of the forest? Is it alone in our own silence or within a group singing songs? Is it in a cup of cacao or on the yoga mat? Where do we find Spirit in our lives and what practices help us to feel this connection in genuine and authentic ways that speak to our own path and truth?
However, can we go beyond the rituals and ceremonies and say that we truly feel connected to Spirit in the everydayness of our lives? Do we feel Spirit as we do the dishes? In our passing conversations? Driving to work? Cooking dinner? And can we see the spark of Spirit in all people, places and things? That coworker we struggle with? That driver that cut us off? The child we see begging in the street? The animals we pass by? In the flowers, the sky and the rocks and trees? Do we actually see this divinity in all things and in all moments or do we just reserve it for that time we set aside each week or month to connect.
The Hierophant is reminding us of the presence of Spirit within us and within all people, places and things. That all of life and all its experiences are sacred. The Hierophant asks, what good is the ceremony if we cannot feel this presence of God within every aspect of our life in all time and space? And can we remember this connection equally through moments of suffering, pleasure and the mundane? Can we truly remember every moment of every day that this life is a sacred and holy experience?
How can we cultivate the feeling and knowing of Spirit and scaredness as a part of who we are? Because if we always need something outside of ourselves to supply us with our faith, we will never really know what it is to truly live with an awareness of Spirit. It is not the priest, the cacao, the ceremony or the building that creates this connection. These are simply tools that can support. It is an open heart and a belief that all things are sacred and connected that allows up to live with the feeling of Spirit within us.
The Hierophant is here to teach us what spirituality all is about. To show us that is not about which path we walk to spirit that matters, but rather finding the path that authentically helps us to cultivate a genuine connection with Spirit that we then channel into our daily experiences. Whatever our practices may be, it is important to see that each path is equally different and deserving of respect. When we respect all living things equally and with sacred reverence it is then that we begin to practice a truly spiritual life that cultivates energies of compassion, peace, love and acceptance. And it is when we uphold the example of what Spirit is within the mundane tasks and experiences of our day to day lives and bring this sacred reverence into our work, our home, our family, and our community that we can truly say that we are spiritual.
Being spiritual is about honoring the sacredness of all expressions of spirit. It does not matter how many ceremonies we have been to, how much medicine we have consumed or hours we spend in yoga poses. It’s about how we show up to share with love, compassion and peace through all that we do. The Hierophant asks us to not seek Spirit, but to remember we are Spirit, and to live as that example every moment of every day.
