The Lovers is a card of connection and unity. It is often thought of as the card of soulmates. And yes, this card can signify the union of pairs, but it also teaches us the lessons needed in order for us to make a healthy and loving connection with others. This connection is not limited to romantic type relationships either. This card can also come up in relation to all types of connections as well.
Some central themes around this card are Truth and Trust. In order to create a trusting relationship with anyone we must choose to be honest. An honesty that bares all parts of ourselves to another in full vulnerability. But to do this we must also feel safe in this vulnerability and trust that the other person will receive this truth with compassion and love, and without judgement or fear. Before we can get there however, we must first be able to do this for ourselves.
A common depiction on this card often shows a masculine and a feminine character. When we look at what these energies represent symbolically rather than the literal gender, we can see the masculine character as being representative of our consciousness and the feminine character representative of our subconscious. Our mind and our heart. It is here between these 2 parts of ourselves that we must first find union through love and acceptance before we can expect to find it within another.
Union between our head and heart is possible when both aspects of ourselves are aligned with our truth. The ultimate truth being one of complete Love and acceptance for all that we are. Spirt and Human. Light and Shadow. There is no part of us that is better or worse and true love is the ability to embrace all that we are and to see the equality of the different parts of ourselves rather than just accepting what we like and rejecting what we don’t like.
It is through this level of honesty and acceptance that then allows us to truly connect with another. Only when we are willing to show all of ourselves and to be completely naked and exposed for who we truly are, can we then build a relationship of trust and truth.
Another important theme expressed through this card is that of Equality. When we connect with another person, we often get lost in the surface comparisons of what we are and are not vs what they are and are not. However, this card asks us to look deeper and to see the soul that resides within each of us and to remember that we are all spirit at our core. We are all equal. And we are all deserving of Love and Acceptance despite what our judgements and fears might tell us. True Love exists at this soul level, when you strip away all the definitions and labels we have created in a world that defines us through our separateness rather than our soul level equality. How can we ever know true love if all we see is what makes us different, rather than what makes us the same. The Lovers encourages us to find this core truth within ourselves so that we can then see this truth within all others.
Remember Love is not something we find, it is what we are. And if we want to experience true love, we must strip away all that keeps us from remembering this within ourselves and with others. Love is our truth, hate is the lie we’ve been taught. The Lovers is our reminder to choose our truth. To choose Love.
